Times Channel Exclusive Report

In India's most high-profile boardroom coup, Cyrus Mistry was ousted from Tata Sons as chairman after succeeding Ratan Tata and died in a car accident in Maharashtra's Palghar on Sunday, said police. He was 54 years old.

Mistry was driving a Mercedes car from Gujarat's Udwada to Mumbai, the report said.

Pictures from the accident site showed the mangled remains of the silver Mercedes. The accident happened when the car hit the road divider in the Charlotte area of Palghar, 135 km from Mumbai.

"The accident took place around 3.15 pm when Mistry was traveling to Mumbai. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident," said Palghar district superintendent of police, Balasaheb Patil.

Along with Mr. Mistry, Jehangir Pandole, Anahita Pandora, and Darius Pandole were present in the car.

The accident also claimed the life of Darius Pandora's brother, Jehangir Pandora.
Darius Pandole was an independent director in Tata group companies and opposed Mr. Mistry's removal. He also left the Tata group with Mr. Mistry.

Anahita's husband is Darius. The car was being driven by Anahita Pandora, a well-known gynecologist in Mumbai.

A police official told news agency PTI on Sunday night that the car was speeding and had tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side (from the left).

A detailed investigation into the accident has been requested by Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis.
